1. What is the background of this professorial chair?
In November 2020, the UP College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Foundation, Inc. (UP CASAF Inc.) approved the provision of a professorial chair to each of the three colleges that were previously part of the UP College of Arts and Sciences (the College of Arts and Letters, College of Science, and College of Social Sciences and Philosophy).
Among other initiatives to help fulfill the academic objectives of the three colleges, this professorial chair seeks to support faculty development by recognizing scholastic excellence and/or further cultivate the research potential of UP faculty members.
2. Who is Mr. J. Antonio Aguenza?
Mr. J. Antonio Aguenza (1937-2020) was the first president of UP CASAF . He was a UP alumnus, served as Undersecretary for Natural Resources in the 1970s, and taught at UP.
3. What is the difference between the title of “Professorial Chair” and “Faculty Grant”?
If awarded, the title of Professorial Chair will be given to a senior faculty (Associate Professor or Professor). For faculty whose rank is either Instructor or Assistant Professor, the award title will be Faculty Grant.
4. Who are eligible to apply for this award?
Any regular member of the CSSP faculty can apply for this award regardless of status (temporary/permanent). However, the College highly encourages faculty members who normally are not eligible for existing professorial chair/faculty grant awards by the University to apply, specifically those who:

- Holds the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor,
- CSSP faculty who are currently graduate students in UP or other universities, or
- Early career CSSP faculty (up to 5 years after PhD) A postgraduate degree (master’s degree/doctorate) is not a requirement to apply for this award.

5. I am a faculty on study leave, can I still apply for this award?
Yes. Faculty members who are also on various types of leave (special detail, sabbatical leave) are still eligible so long as they are not on leave without pay.
6. How many awards will be given? How much is the award?
At the end of the awarding period, the awardee must satisfy two conditions:
a. Submit an original research manuscript to the Philippine Social Sciences Review (PSSR), the official journal of CSSP, and
b. Deliver a plenary lecture/presentation at the CSSP Graduate Student Research Conference or another academic event of the College.
7. How will this award be dispensed?
Upon the start of the awarding period (start of the academic year), the awardee will receive 50% of the grant with the remaining tranche to be given upon the completion of the required outputs. The UP Foundation is in charge of administering the release of the award funds.
8. Can an awardee request for an extension in the delivery of the required outputs?
Yes. With the approval of the Dean, the awardee may request for an extension of up to six months after the award period to complete the required outputs.
9. What are the requirements in order to apply for this award?
a. A letter of nomination addressed to the Selection Committee that explicitly recognizes the research excellence or scholarly promise of the nominee. The nominator should either be the unit head (Chair/Director) or a senior faculty member of the unit.
b. A curriculum vitae (CV) highlighting research accomplishments
c. Research proposal/ abstract of the manuscript to be submitted to PSSR
d. Sample research-oriented writing output of not more than 10,000 words (publication, graduate seminar paper, etc.)
10. Can a College unit nominate more than one faculty member for this award?
Yes. However, it is advised that each unit recommend a single faculty member for this award per year.
11. When is the deadline for application?
