The University of the Philippines Department of Anthropology, founded in 1917, is one of the earliest academic anthropology programs in Asia. The Department is now part of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, UP Diliman. It offers undergraduate and graduate courses in the four fields of anthropology: cultural/social anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. The courses are designed to help students understand human biological and cultural diversity, and the forces that shape cultural evolution and social change. The Department promotes global perspective and comparative approach in anthropology that is contextualized by doing ethnographic fieldwork, producing cultural knowledge that is engaged, critical and reflexive. |

From our roots as a course under the UP College of Education in the 1920s to the integration with Geology in the 1930s, the UP Department of Geography has eventually found its place as a full-fledged department under the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy in the 1980s. As the only extant Geography department in the Philippines, we hope to bring Geography to where it should be - at the forefront of decision-making in the country. We take an active role in popularizing and propagating Geography to raise awareness on how daily lives are influenced, impacted and co-produced by human-environment interactions and more-than-human worlds, and empower localities in facing the challenges of a technology-mediated globalizing world. |

The UP Department of History belongs to the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. It was founded on 3 June 1910 and is considered to be one of the oldest history departments in the country. Since 1915, the department has offered graduate courses for students taking further studies under the Master of Arts program. The Doctorate of Philosophy in History program, on the other hand, was launched in 1976. For almost a century and a decade now, the Department has shown that it is highly dedicated to producing students who can thrive in the increasingly competitive field of History. Aside from having several faculty members who are recognized as lead experts in various leading specializations here and abroad, the Department is doing its best to further improving its profile in terms of teaching and extension work, increasing the number and relevance of its research outputs and aligning the discourses of history to national development goals. The vision and mission of the Department of History under the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy of the University of the Philippines Diliman both aim to provide a high-quality education and research that are at par with international and regional standards, which will therefore contribute to the advancement of scholarship in the fields of history, social sciences, and Philippine Studies. The Department’s vision states “a department that is prestigious and a leader in the discipline of history within and outside the academe in terms of teaching, research, and extension services.” The Department’s mission states “to continue its mandate as the country’s Center of Excellence in History; to lead in the development of new areas, fields, and disciplines in historical teaching, research, and writing.” |

The UP Department of Linguistics (established 28 August 1922) has been at the forefront of language studies in the Philippines, primarily on the scientific study, preservation, and promotion of Philippine languages and dialects through teaching, research, and publication. It also aims to contribute to general and theoretical linguistics and use research to significantly help in addressing language issues in the country. Housed in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, the Department is the only institution in the country that offers BA, MA, and PhD degrees in Linguistics. It is designated by CHED as a Center of Excellence in Foreign Languages for its contributions to the improvement of teaching of the national languages of Asia. It offers a roster of Asian languages which are integrated in the BA Linguistics course plans (Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia, Japanese, and Korean) and houses University-instituted language courses such as Mandarin, Thai, and Persian. Its research agenda mainly focuses on Philippine structural and historical linguistics as well as interdisciplinary inquiries between linguistics and other fields. The outputs are disseminated through various platforms such as The Archive journal and the triennial Philippine Linguistics Congress. The Department regularly provides training through the Summer Seminars in Linguistics and Extramural Classes in Asian Languages. |

Department of Philosophy Established in 1910, The Department of Philosophy sits at the forefront of Analytic and Applied Philosophy in the Philippines. Through its undergraduate and graduate degrees in Philosophy and Bioethics, the department aims to develop and implement innovative philosophical pedagogies and curricula to foster epistemic and moral agents who are poised to lead the nation. It boasts local and international research and extension linkages as well as a roster of faculty members with diverse specializations in Philosophy for Children, Environmental Ethics, Feminist Philosophy, and Filipino Philosophy that are responsive to the ever changing needs of society and humanity as a whole. The Department of Psychology promotes a scientist-practitioner-advocate model of psychology. We bring psychology to the government, civil society, and the private sector. We address basic as well as applied issues, particularly those related to social justice, social change, and quality of life. We are distinct in our strong emphasis on Filipino Psychology. Our roster of highly competent and productive faculty conduct and publish individual and collaborative, area-based and multi-disciplinal research. Our high-level teaching and mentoring take place in an environment grounded on respect and openness for diversity. We are driven to inspire the community of psychologists in their pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and service to society. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs: BA and BS Psychology, MA Psychology, MA I/O Psychology, and PhD Psychology. The Department of Sociology was established as a distinct academic unit of UP Diliman on November 9, 1962. Its history, however, dates to the founding of the University when courses in sociology were offered through the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, which was later restricted to the Department of Sociology and Social Welfare in the 1950s. The Department is offering one undergraduate program, BA Sociology, and two graduate programs, MA Sociology and PhD Sociology. The programs aim to develop graduates that could offer relevant and critical analyses of Philippine and global society. All three programs culminate in a capstone project in the form of a thesis or dissertation. Sociology majors take courses in sociological theories, sociological research, and electives that fall in the domains of social organizations, social psychology, social change and disorganization, and demography and human ecology. At the end of their programs, graduates are able to become critical and reflexive thinkers and socially-responsive citizens who appreciate the interconnections between their own circumstances and broader national, regional and global trends through sociological theories and research. |
