Condolences: Professor Emeritus Armando F. Bonifacio (1928-2021)
Armando F. Bonifacio (1928-2021) was Professor Emeritus at the Department of Philosophy in UP Diliman. He began his career as Instructor under the chairmanship of Dr. Ricardo Pascual, whom he later on succeeded as Chair. He obtained his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1968.
Dr. Bonifacio, or “Boni,” to his colleagues and friends was considered one of the intellectual luminaries of the early years of UP Diliman. In the 1950s, he was part of a group of junior faculty members called “The Ravens.” At the threat of rising sectarianism on campus, he joined the fight for academic freedom as a member of the Society for the Advancement of Academic Freedom whose members included Leopoldo Yabes, Alfredo Lagmay, and Ricaredo Demetillo, among others. He was also part of the conversation that led to the inception of the earliest versions of the General Education Program. His well-known works include "On Analytic-Synthetic Truths—A Methodological Comment" (1959), "Critical Thinking in General Education" (1961), and "A Concept of Transcendental Knowledge" (1976).
He died last Friday, 10 December 2021. His remains have been laid to rest in their family garden.
