Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology offers undergraduate and graduate courses in the five fields of anthropology: cultural and social anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and anthropological theory

Geography

As the only Geography department in the Philippines, we hope to bring Geography to where it should be - the center of decision-making in our country. We take active role in propagating Geography in order to raise awareness on how daily lives are influenced by human-environment interaction and empower localities in facing challenges of an increasingly globalizing world. we take pride in our strengths in both physical and human geography as well as geographic techniques such as spatial analysis, cartography, geographic information science (GIScience), remote sensing, and statistical methods, articulated in its teaching, research, and extension activities.

History

The Department of History was founded on 3 June 1910 along with six other departments that then comprised the College of Liberal Arts. The first professors were Americans and most courses were centered on the history of Europe and the United States. In the next years, with the coming in of Filipino teachers, the Department's pro-Filipino orientation was eventually beginning to appear as reflected on the Philippine History subjects that the Department offered.

Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics is the only institution in the Philippines that offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Linguistics. Its primary goals are (1) to continue developing as a primary center for the study and archiving of languages and dialects in the Philippines; (2) to contribute to general and theoretical linguistics; and (3) to significantly help in recognizing, clarifying, and solving language problems in the country. Its secondary goal is to improve the teaching of the national languages of Asia according to the needs of the Filipino people.

Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy is the leading advocate of the critical, analytical approach to the teaching of Philosophy in our country. Aside from its traditional strength in the main theoretical areas of Philosophy, its faculty are leaders in research in Applied Philosophy and Bioethics.

Political Science

A Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) Center of Excellence in Political Science in the country. It is home to eminent Political Science scholars delivering the best instruction in the discipline. The Department also undertakes research projects with policy and community impact, consistently producing local and international publications. Through its active leadership in the association of Political Science professionals, the Department has provided service to the wider public from its pool of public intellectuals, experts and advocates.

Psychology

Provides the student exposure to the wide range of psychological theories and research methodologies which can be useful preparation for further professional training as psychologists, medical doctors, lawyers or for work in schools, industry, media, and other social agencies in various capacities involving research, counseling, psychological testing, personnel work, training and planning.

Sociology

The UP Department of Sociology has been providing quality education, research, and community/extension services through its various programs for almost one hundred years. It was first founded as the Department of Anthropology and Sociology in 1908 and later restructured as the Department of Sociology and Social Welfare in the 1950's. On 9 November 1962, the Department was established as a distinct unit of the University  and came to be known as the UP Department of Sociology.

Population Institute

The University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) is the only academic institution in the country which offers postgraduate degrees in Demography and Population Studies. The UPPI  has a strong research  focus on technical demography  including population projections, population and development  and on number of population-related themes including fertility, nuptiality, mortality, migration, urbanization, youth sexuality, reproductive health, and environment; as well as subgroups of the population such as youth and older persons, outputs of which have been used in government plans and programs. As part of its extension work, the UPPI also sits in various technical working groups to assist government in the collection and generation of population-related data.

Third World Studies Center

The Third World Studies Center (TWSC) is a social science research center in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman. It is committed to analyzing and developing alternative perspectives on Philippine, regional, and global issues grounded on academic research in the best tradition of scholarly practice. Its mission is to develop critical, alternative paradigms to promote progressive scholarship and action for change by undertaking pioneering research on issues of national and international concerns; create spaces for discussion and dialogue; publish original, empirically grounded, and innovative studies; and build a network of activist-scholars and public intellectuals.

Tri-College PhD Philippine Studies Program

Beginning in 2004, the independent Ph.D. Philippine Studies programs of the Asian Center (AC), the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), and the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, were formally incorporated into an interdisciplinary doctoral program. The joint program was established as the Tri-College PhD Philippine Studies Program, with the Asian Center tasked to serve as the central secretariat and headquarters. A Philippine    Studies Council and a Coordinating Committee oversee management of the program, from curriculum review to dissertation defense and student relations. Depending on their area of specialization, program of study, and dissertation, students will take their courses at and from the Asian Center, the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, and/or the College of Arts and Letters.
